I cannot believe it has been a year since I began my Instagram account @TheBalancedRose, originally @Roseinthe_Kitchen! Happy 1st birthday! Woohooo! (Sorry, I am just super excited!) Quite the year it has been, so full of growth, of rebirth and of falling apart, ups, downs, amazing memories, and trying moments, but such a beautiful and wonderful journey along the way. I thought a celebration recipe was in order so I thought back to one of my favorites.
TRUE LIFE: I am obsessed with turmeric- I think that should be an episode. I love turmeric and all of its amazing anti-inflammatory properties. This wonderful golden spice does wonders for our bodies at the cellular level as well as our bodies as a whole. As I discussed a few posts back, turmeric’s main active ingredient is curcumin, which contributes to the amazing effects turmeric has on the body. It contains high levels of manganese, iron, vitamin B6, fiber, copper, and potassium, and is a quite strong but extremely safe anti-inflammatory.
Before I get started on how amazing and delicious this bowl of goodness tastes, let’s talk about turmeric. “What is turmeric?” You may ask. Turmeric is a golden spice which comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant that is native to southeast India. It has a warm but bitter, and peppery flavor with a mild fragrance almost like orange and ginger. It is traditionally used in a great deal of Indian cuisine and is behind the bright yellow color of mustard.
Fall is truly my favorite time of year. The leaves begin turning bright colors and falling to the ground looking like flowers upon the still green grass, the outdoors looking like an almost painted landscape. One of my favorite sounds is the leaves crunching and crackling under my feet. While I love summer and spring, not so much winter—being from New England—fall is truly the most beautiful time of the year.
This can certainly sound strange if you have never heard of zoats before. Zoats are a delicious way of sneakily adding veggies into your breakfast when you crave a warming bowl of porridge. Zoats are also a great low carbohydrate & high protein option because they are made up of egg whites, zucchini, and a small amount of rolled oats, along with some other ingredients.
In high school I got really into making smoothies. I had a “classic” smoothie I would always make which I still remember to this day: 1 cup water, 1 banana, 1/2 cup berries, & 1 cup spinach. It was always very tasty but I never knew anything about all of wonderful ways you could make a smoothie! This smoothie is probably my new “classic” smoothie, super simple, very nourishing, and absolutely delicious.
